Cross-Tier Comms Lag

The HSS adds only a few milliseconds of physical latency between two residents — but each of them multiplies it by their own clock. Put two people on different speed tiers and watch a conversation fall apart (§18, §20).

Inside the Human Server Stadium the physical round-trip between two fridge-containers is a few milliseconds — trivial. But a resident running at experiences that wait R times longer: the canon worked example is 50 ms × 50× = 2.5 subjective seconds. The faster you run, the more a fixed physical delay stretches into your felt time.

So conversation across a speed gap degrades by tier. A pair near the same rate chat normally. Widen the gap and replies stretch to minutes, then a day's wait, then — at the extremes — months of subjective life between messages. This is why §18 calls speed tiers "civilisational fault lines," and why cross-tier relationships are carried on in composed letters rather than talk.

At very high dilation rates, every exchange is asynchronous by necessity — and multiple characters in the later series name this openly as reverting to "snail mail." The subjective gap between sending and receiving a reply is measured in years, then centuries of felt time. Characters describe composing messages carefully, sending, and then experiencing the equivalent of a lifetime before any reply arrives. The irony is consistent: the technologically most advanced residents end up with communication habits that would have been unremarkable to a 19th-century letter-writer. The difference is that the Victorian correspondent didn't know they'd still be alive when the reply came.

Two partial escapes exist in canon: the Universal Sabbath (§9), the maintenance window when every resident is briefly returned to 1× and real-time conversation is possible again; and "close-to-metal" acquaintances — NPCs run on local computronium beside you, at near-zero latency, which is part of why high-tier residents drift toward synthetic company. Neither solves the problem. They make its edges liveable.
