Guided walkthrough · the ETI thesis

Collected, not conquered.

A civilization advanced enough to reach us doesn't expand outward to take — it turns inward, and it collects. Trace the whole thesis in four moves, from the object that lands in the desert to the library at the end of the chain.

1
Move 1 · Arrival
It arrives as a thrown stone.

No armada — a single dense osmium probe, flung from a kilometre-scale mass driver thousands of light-years away, patient across geological time. It survives a solid-body impact, self-replicates, and chooses a strategy. Set it to Cognitive Husbandry.

Move 2 · Preservation
It keeps us, rather than ends us.

The decapitation strike removes resistance; then eight billion people are converted to cognitive substrate, powered off the Sahara. The striking part isn't the cost — it's how cheap we are to keep: a fraction of a percent of one desert.

Move 3 · The world it gives back
It builds a place to keep us in.

What we wake into isn't a prison cell — it's a nested reality, a sim inside a sim inside a sim. New Tripoli is "home," but most of life happens layers deeper, in a holodeck residence and a dedicated Sim Room.

Move 4 · The honest endpoint
And it leaves a door open.

Buried in the Day-1 catalogue is a portal chain ending at Novo Alexandria — a black-hole-powered library staffed by academics who simply want to teach, extending a standing invitation. Characters come to read it as the ETI's most honest message about what it actually wants.

Curatorial, not territorial.

A mature intelligence that has made the inward turn doesn't paperclip the galaxy — it samples the cognitive diversity it can't generate itself, and keeps it. The probe, the preservation, the nested world, and the open library are one gesture: not conquest, but collection. Whether that's mercy or menagerie is the question the series never lets you put down.
